ST PETER’S CE PRIMARY SCHOOL
Religious Education
"Pupils’ knowledge about religious education is impressive and enables them to develop a deep respect for those around them." SIAMS Report 2017
At St Peters, we are committed to the teaching and learning of an engaging and inspiring RE Curriculum. We believe RE has an important role in reflecting and conveying our distinctively Christian character of our school. Our school Christian vision of ‘Act Justly, love mercy, walk humbly with your God’ is firmly embedded in our teaching of RE. Our curriculum is carefully planned to provide children with the opportunity to develop a spiritual and moral approach to life.
RE at St Peter’s seeks to address important questions about the meaning and purpose of existence, and to discover and celebrate what is ultimately worthwhile and valuable in life. We aim to ensure that pupils acquire a knowledge and understanding of both Christianity and other religious beliefs and practices through exploring other world faiths including: Islam, Judaism, Sikhism, Hinduism and Buddhism. Children are also able to reflect on their own beliefs, values and experiences in light of their study. The RE curriculum is based on the London Diocesan Syllabus and is determined by the Governing Body.
Through Religious Education, pupils will be enabled to:
- Develop and extend knowledge, understanding and awareness of the Christian faith and other religious traditions.
- Develop an understanding of the beliefs, values and traditions of individuals, communities, societies and cultures.
- Develop the ability to make informed judgements about religious and moral issues, with reference to the teachings of the principal religions.
- Enhance their spiritual, moral, cultural and social development.
At St. Peters we deliver a rich and varied curriculum. Alongside writing, art and drama are used to explore topics and ‘Big Questions’. Visits to other places of worship are scheduled so children can explore different world faiths. Trips have included Temples and Synagogues. We also use the children’s own experience as a valuable resource and build upon their prior knowledge, ideas and interests. Furthermore, as a Church of England school, we have close links with our patronal church, St Peter’s in Hammersmith. We regularly visit church for Christian festivals and important occasions. The Vicar is also integral to our teaching and learning in RE and there are regular visits to classes during RE lessons to support the children’s learning.
In the Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist School’s, which took place in October 2017, St Peters was graded ‘Outstanding’ in all areas. The report stated ‘Pupils’ knowledge about religious education is impressive and enables them to develop a deep respect for those around them’.
RE Curriculum
Our RE curriculum has been planned and sequenced in line with LDBS curriculum objectives. Our units of teaching are well balanced and sequenced, enabling children to enquire into religions and worldviews through theology, philosophy and the human and social sciences.
