ST PETER'S CE PRIMARY SCHOOL

RSHE (including PSHE)

"You're braver than you believe, stronger than you seem and smarter than you think" - A.A. Milne, Winnie the Pooh

At St. Peters, we believe that quality teaching of RSHE enables children to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to keep themselves healthy and safe as well as preparing them for life and work. The RSHE curriculum is explored through a range of activities. Every day, pupils take part in assemblies where we explore issues such as respect, diversity, tolerance and relationships which also helps pupils learn about British Values. Through lessons, we aim to educate and support children in making informed choices about healthy eating, fitness and their emotional and mental well-being. Children have an age-appropriate understanding of healthy relationships and are taught about how to manage risk and stay safe. Our programme of study also supports the Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural development of the children.

RSHE Curriculum

At St Peter's, we follow a programme of study by Jigsaw. Jigsaw, the mindful approach to PSHE, brings together Personal, Social, Health Education, emotional literacy, social skills and spiritual development in a comprehensive scheme of learning.

Jigsaw is designed as a whole school approach, with all year groups working on the same theme (Puzzle) at the same time. There are six Puzzles (half-term units of work) each with six Pieces (lessons). Every year group studies the same Puzzle at the same time, allowing for whole school themes and the end of Puzzle product. Each year group is taught one lesson per week and all lessons are delivered in an age- and stage-appropriate way so that they meet children’s needs.

Half termly units are based on the following themes:

1. Being me in the world

2. Celebrating difference

3. Dreams and goals

4. Healthy me

5. Relationships

6. Changing me

Children also take part in workshops throughout the year, including, ‘Anti-bullying week', ‘Children’s Mental Health Day’ and ‘Safer Internet Day’, amongst others.

Health and Wellbeing Week

Each year in summer term, we organise a ‘Health and Wellbeing Week’, where children take part in a number of workshops and classroom based activities to promote mental health and leading a healthy lifestyle. We invite many outside organisations to lead workshops, such as yoga and dance, as well as drama based activities based upon Health and Wellbeing.

School Council

In each year group, two children are selected to be part of the ‘School Council’. Regular meetings are held, where whole school concerns are discussed and initiatives to make St. Peters a better place are suggested by pupils. The school council also organises fundraising and whole school events.
